Job Description:

Job Title: Legal Advocate – Civil & Criminal Litigation Support (Police Services)
Location: Hybrid (with regular court attendance)
Contract: until 31st March 2026 initially
Hours: 36.25 hours per week
Rate: £50–£55 per hour (via umbrella company)

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Solicitor with strong advocacy experience to join a specialist legal team supporting a Police Force in the North West. While not a traditional civil solicitor role, this position is particularly suited to a legal professional with a criminal law background and experience working in Magistrates and Family Courts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Court Representation:
    Frequent advocacy in Magistrates’ Courts (especially in relation to civil community orders) and Family Courts (e.g. disclosure applications).

  • Legal Advice & Support:
    Provide high-quality legal advice to police officers and staff across a wide range of issues, including police powers and duties, human rights, civil liability, and public protection matters.

  • Legal Research:
    Conduct research and provide timely, practical guidance to support police investigations and operational decision-making.

  • File Management:
    Build and manage legal files effectively, maintaining strong standards of accuracy and documentation.

  • Policy & Governance:
    Contribute to the development of internal legal policies, ensuring compliance with legislation such as the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, and the Human Rights Act.

  • Liaison & Representation:
    Attend meetings and liaise with various external agencies and professionals, including solicitors, counsel, courts, and statutory bodies.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Qualified solicitor with substantial advocacy experience in Magistrates’ and Family Courts.

  • Background in criminal law strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of civil orders, disclosure processes, and Human Rights Act considerations is desirable.

  • Strong file-building and legal research skills.

  • Able to work independently and provide sound, strategic legal advice.

  • Familiarity with public sector or police legal services advantageous but not essential.
